Italy – Giannutri, the first Smart Island of Terna, ENGIE Eps technology

Giannutri is an island of the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 15 km off the coast of Tuscany, with strong summer peak load. Local population relies exclusively on diesel generators.

Due to low efficiency and high cost of transporting diesel fuel, the cost of energy reached 430€/MWh, 10 times the average cost in Italy.

Replacement of diesel generation will be achieved through the creation of an ENGIE Eps microgrid composed of photovoltaics coupled with a multi-technology energy storage system.

The project is aimed at reducing energy costs and levels of polluting emissions within the Smart Islands project launched by Terna, to replace diesel with renewables on the islands not connected to the transmission grid. The project includes the islands of Pantelleria and Giglio too
